An objective statement is a statement which is true or false independently of any person’s individual point of view or position. A subjective statement is one whose truth value does depend on a person’s individual point of view or perspective.
Most of us accept that mathematical statements are objective. 2 + 2 = 4 regardless of anyone’s upbringing, values, or point of view.
Our tastes in food, however, seem to be much more subjective. I would say that “Brussels sprouts are delicious” is a true statement, while others would say that it is a false statement, and there seems to be no objective reality or truth to which we could appeal to settle this dispute.
Your assignment: In 150 words or more, tell me whether you believe that morality involves objective or subjective statements, and why you believe what you do–I won’t generally add this phrase to my questions, but in college you should always assume it is there. Then, you will be able to see your classmates’ responses. Finally, respond to one other classmate’s post. You will lose two points if you fail to complete this portion of the assignment.
Estimated completion time: 30-60 minutes.
