The evolution of the Kimberley Process (KP)
Reflect on what the KP means for global governance.
Discuss the role of nonstate actors in global governance: what is their place and potential as a global leader? Which of the resources of nonstate actors have been particularly valuable (information, moral entrepreneurship, global finance, etc.)? (Teams MNCs, Kimberley Process)
Can you discuss the role of nonstate actors in the KP? Such actors are the diamond mining coperations, the NGOs, the global media, individuals… In another announcement, I gave an example with Global Witness, the NGO that first raised awareness about the trade in conflict diamonds. Can you write a paper about that? Go you believe they demonstrated leadership, mobilized others for action, designed new forms of cooperation, etc.?
Or, consider topic #4. It refers to new arrangements in global governance. The KP is one of them:
* Discuss the role of new models and methods of global governance. Is the established post-WWII system of international institutions strengthened or weakened as a result of emerging new forms of governance, and is it in the process of being replaced with new flexible and context-specific arrangements? (Teams USD, Governance of the Arctic, Kimberley Process, Critical materials, G-20)
Can you talk about what is new in the KP as an arrangement that regulates behavior a particular area of global interaction (trade, cooperation between sttates and nonstate actors, etc.)? Does the KP resemble an international institution? Why didn’t the UN, the world’s universal organization, or the WTO in which almost all countries are members, resolve the issue but it had to be brand new arrangement? Is it more effective like that? Or, does arrangements such as the KP weaken the established international institutions? These are the kinds of questions that can be explored
