As you read the short story Hills Like White Elephants by Ernest Hemingway, pay close attention to what you recognize as symbolism in the text. Examine how objects in the story represent, or symbolize, other things. Keep in mind that there is no one correct interpretation of the text. You may notice something that others don’t.
Here are some questions to consider to help guide you through the reading. I highly recommend you read and reread the story at least twice!

Where does the story take place? Is there anything in the setting that could symbolize or represent something else?
Look closely at where the characters are and what’s around them.
Where are they specifically? What about the landscape?
What are the characters doing?

What is a white elephant? How does Hemingway use this image as a symbol of something else?
