You are in the emergency room when a 16-year-old is brought in after being shot and having sustained a spinal cord injury.  His breathing is becoming labored and the team is deciding whether to do an endotracheal intubation now to facilitate breathing, or rush him to the OR where he will be intubated ahead of surgery.  The nurse tells his patient that he may need to have a tube in his windpipe to help him breathe.  The patient says, “If I’m going to be paralyzed, I want to die. Don’t do anything to save my life.” Should the patient be intubated, or should he be allowed to die of respiratory failure?  What is the nurse’s responsibility here?
In a 4-5-page paper:
Describe AND discuss the ethical dilemma faced here; include whether you think that the ethics committee can play a role here, given the situation. This will need critical thinking.
Discuss how this issue is related to an ethical theory.
Discuss how the 4 topics method AND related principles of analysis may be applied to the situation.
Discuss how you would apply 2 provisions of the ANA Code of Ethics to the issue.
