For this assignment, you will be required to choose one of the European colonial powers (England, France, Spain, Holland, Portugal, or Sweden) and explain their approach to colonizing the New World. Be sure to include early voyages of discovery, establishment of colonies, approach to dealing with the native peoples, who were the colonizers sent over, what were their purposes in colonizing the New World, how successful were they, what happened to them, and what were their impacts on the history of the future United States. Notes must be in Turabian (also known as Chicago) format and include at least three sources in addition to your textbook. Wikipedia is not a valid source for a scholarly paper/presentation. You will state why you chose this colonial power, give a brief synopsis of their motivations and experiences in the New World and explain their impact on the history of the United States to include why you think we should know more about them. The important thing is to answer the “so what?” question which means giving us the reasons why we should learn more about this person. To receive high marks on this assignment, you will need to do more than the minimum required to complete it.
Papers will be formatted with 1” margins, use 12-point Times New Roman font, be double spaced, include a title page and bibliography. Presentations will include notes (your talking points), a title slide, and a bibliography slide(s).
Title pages/slides will be formatted to have the title of the paper/presentation, your name, course, the college, and the date.
