Final Project Eight weeks have elapsed since Lt Gates briefed the Summit County Sheriff’s Office detective bureau on the four offenses currently under investigation. For this block, students will craft a 3-5 page report which details the investigative steps, evidence handling, evidence sent for analysis, and search warrant requests for one of the investigations listed. A worksheet containing an outline of the investigative plan is attached. Students should complete the worksheet and submit in .doc, .docx or .pdf form. Given the hypothetical nature of the scenarios listed, it’s encouraged for students to use some creativity liberty in presenting possible investigative scenarios. The goal is for students to demonstrate investigative skills in relation to the hypothetical offenses. When explaining investigative methods, include URL’s to investigative resources online and page numbers from the Shipley and Bowker text. Students are encouraged to use screenshots as demonstrations or examples but not as simply decorative elements. I. Overview of the Offense Restate the facts presented in the hypothetical offense selected from week one. Add additional hypothetical information, such as the apprehension of suspects or discovery of additional evidence, in an effort to better demonstrate the application of these investigative techniques in sections II-V below. II. Evidence List each evidence item retrieved and what relevant information is possible to be recovered and the process by which the data can be recovered. III. Investigative Steps List what steps investigators should take to investigative this offense. Steps suggest sources and steps not specifically listed (i.e. video surveillance, cellular telephone towers). Apply steps directly to the hypothetical offense. IV. Legal Requests Students should detail what legal process should be obtained for each item. For instance, if email is sought, what legal process should be used (search warrant), to whom would be sent and what would information would be sought. V. Charges Using the state laws from the state you’re currently residing, or if overseas, your home state, choose up to three statutes that the suspect may be charged with. List each offense, the specific state statute and an explanatory paragraph. Include a link to the state statute website you’re referencing for this section.
