One Pager Assignment for Refugee (Gratz, 2017)
What is a One Pager?
One Pager: an image-heavy, idea-driven assessment that prompts students to select the most meaningful ideas in a text, make connections to their own lives, and display the ideas creatively with color, drawings, and quotes. One-pagers are magical in the sense that they make thinking and talking about reading fun again.
***Note: One-pagers can be modified for any subject and any type of text. (Such as analyzing images, music videos, historical, social science, popular science, and current event articles.)
PURPOSE: *Comprehension Assessment*–Many students are strong in comprehension and discussion of texts BUT have difficulty writing well about the texts.
● The one-pager makes the writing component less intimidating, so students are focused more on the ideas in the text. They were not worried about their transitions or writing a stance or a conclusion. As a result, a lot of anxiety is lifted when students complete one-pagers as an assessment.
● For example, students who speak another language at home and students who have learning disabilities tend to find one-pagers powerful pieces to show their learning.
