Many theorists of personality are remembered for one or more of the concepts they developed. With Rotter, it is the concept of locus of control, and with Bandura, it is the concept of efficacy expectations. Each of these presents a different viewpoint of how human beings complete tasks and reach goals. This activity will help you in determining how your life is influenced by the work of these two theorists.
Upon successful completion of this discussion, you will be able to:
Discuss and evaluate the relationship of Rotter’s concept of locus of control with Bandura’s concept of efficacy expectations.
Resources
Textbook: Theories of Personality
Web Article: Who do You Think Is in Control in Addiction? A Pilot Study on Drug-related Locus of Control Beliefs
Background Information
Rotter’s internal-external locus of control theory focuses on forces within our control as opposed to forces outside out control to which he referred, respectively, as internal and external. According to Rotter, it is our attitude about these two opposing forces that shapes our behavior. Bandura’s efficacy theory refers to one’s personal perception of his/her ability to complete tasks and reach goals. In this activity, you are asked to evaluate these two viewpoints, discussing how they support each other and how they may work against each other.
